Macha Kiddo (Sofia Madriz) is an artist who raps with the fury of a tropical wind and the sweetness of a mango. Born in Alajuela, Costa Rica and based in Buenos Aires for over a decade, she debuted her project in 2017 with the single ‘Monster’. The song was released as a part of the compilation Future Sounds of Argentina on Waxploitation (Gnarls Barkley, La Yegros). Billboard highlighted her for her style reminiscent of Bronx hip hop.
Macha Kiddo plays with genres like Trap, RnB, Indie, Lo-Fi, and Hip Hop. She has a unique flow that fluidly bounces between a variety of styles, a skill which has allowed her to collaborate with artists across the musical panorama such as Mula, Kaleema, Sara Hebe, and More. With every release, she puts herself on the map with her flow that embodies a fearlessness not often heard within the Urbano panorama, and touching on issues ranging from Queer love to feminism to ceviche . Her forthcoming release, Malacrianza, is a clear evolution of her sound, from her hard-hitting hooks to the infusion of Caribbean influences as well as touches of freestyle, it’s an album meant for both uninhibited perreo and introspection. “Perfection isn’t important” Macha says in explaining the title of the album. It’s a true ode to using the tools that we have to make something amazing, and doing it despite the circumstances.
Malacrianza follows the 2021 release of Lesbihonest, which was released on Kin Kon Records out of Los Angeles. This album, also released on Kin Kon, is a feat of borderless collaboration- between Buenos Aires, Los Angeles, Costa Rica and beyond, the production was done mostly remote. The album features a mindblowing team of producers including Ulises Lozano (El Licenciado), a GRAMMY nominated producer known for his work with Kinky, Becky G, Chiquis, and more. It also features Macha’s long-time collaborator Relo, who is the magic behind many of her hardest-hitting tracks. Also on production on the song “Maria Maria” Macha brings in a new collaborator, Coconírico (Carlos Sanchez Román), a musician and producer from Barquisimeto, Venezuela. The name of the album, Malacrianza, is a word that’s commonly used in Costa Rica to describe someone who’s badly behaved. It is an album that shows Macha coming home to her own sound, incorporating more Caribbean and tropical elements than she ever has in her previous releases- “The way I bring myself closer to Costa Rica is by incorporating it into everything I do,” she says
